About Nunavut

The Objectives
  • Help prevent the Inuit population in Canada from losing their language – a result of stigma and lack of education
  • Reach and capture the 25 dialects spoken by the 50,000 Inuit who live in northern Canada – a mandated effort to standardize the language over the next 15 years
  • Allow communities to work together to unify their language and culture
  • Digitally publish terms as they become standardized to enable their quick dissemination throughout their schools, workplace and literature
The Solution
  • An online collaborative database and workflow – from initial suggestion, assessment and committee voting, to publishing in the online dictionary
  • A process to enable IUT staff to evaluate suggestions and support material from the widespread Inuit population, which then eliminated the need for travel
  • The integration of the NRC’s Inuktitut Language Technologies
The Result
  • Accelerated the standardization of a language term from over 1 year to less than 3 months
  • Significantly increased the amount of language terms collected as a result of public participation and collaboration in the process
  • Invited to speak at the Inuit Circumpolar Council’s Technology Exchange conference in Nuuk, Greenland
